Crossover

I think it's time I inject a little of my vegan self back into this blog - since I don't think many of you check out my recipe site...

1. Favorite non-dairy milk?

Soy - I've tried rice milk - but I found it icky, and soy is the best one nutritionally speaking - I've started drinking microwaved silk vanilla soy milk in the afternoon at work to a satisfy my sweet tooth - that stuff is awesome

2. What are the top 3 dishes/recipes you are planning to cook?

Ethiopian seitan from VWAV, Chick'n Pot Pie with Biscuits - my own recipe in the works and something sweet/savory with peanut butter - not sure yet.

3. Topping of choice for popcorn?

Salt and "butter"

4. Most disastrous recipe/meal failure?

Hmm, recently my Jerk seitan....

5. Favorite pickled item?

Oma's dill pickles and watermelon - darn right pickled watermelon - it's a Menno thing supposedly

6. How do you organize your recipes?

Hmm, I have a folder somewhere - but to be honest I think it's still with my parents, normally I fold the ones I get off the Internet and put them in VWAV - if I use them and they work the recipe gets posted, if it doesn't - it goes.

7. Compost, trash, or garbage disposal?

Trash and Recycle - I don't know how my landlord would feel if I added a composter into his beloved backyard

8. If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 3 foods…what would they be (don’t worry about how you’ll cook them)?

Coffee, soy milk and chocolate - wait I would die wouldn't I? Can I take a multivitamin to ensure my neural pathways don't die from a lack of B12? It would be a tasty way to go though

9. Fondest food memory from your childhood?

Pirogies - making the cottage cheese ones and Rempel's sausage... jeez heart attack

10. Favorite vegan ice cream?

Mario's Amaretto Gelato

11. Most loved kitchen appliance?

Kitchen Aid Food Processor and my mandolin - both I left with my mother...

12. Spice/herb you would die without?

Garam Marsala (though that's way more than one) and Cumin

13. Cookbook you have owned for the longest time?

Personally owned - Nigella Lawson's second one - the one published after How to Eat - which I own as well.

14. Favorite flavor of jam/jelly?

Raspberry - though my mother's pineapple apricot is pretty close behind - and of course the raspberry is homemade.

15. Favorite vegan recipe to serve to an omni friend?

Cupcakes - sweets are how I start the conversion process

16. Seitan, tofu, or tempeh?

Tofu - purely for flexibility - Seitan still gives me grief and since faux meat isn't a huge draw for me outside of fake bacon... I know know, but I do love the name. Tempeh? I can't get my hands on the non-seasoned stuff, and since I use it just to make sausage it's not high on the list.

Seriously about seitan - I can't wait until Christmas when I get to say it's Seitan and the look on my family's face - for those you're eating "Say-ten"? For sure.

17. Favorite meal to cook (or time of day to cook)?

Roasted vegetables in curry with chickpeas, fresh roti and mango chutney.

18. What is sitting on top of your refrigerator?

Fruit, quiche plate and a 1/2 used bag of pasta I can't find room for in the cupboard

19. Name 3 items in your freezer without looking.

Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies (vegan of course - yes Leaha there are still cookies in the house), Stahlbrand butternut squash - a must for the freezer, Seitan

20. What’s on your grocery list?

Laundry detergent, salt, canola oil, frozen strawberries, vanilla soy...

21. Favorite grocery store?

Whole Foods for fun, Donald's for practicality

22. Name a recipe you’d love to veganize, but haven’t yet.

Pirogies, stuffing, platz (though I'm almost there with that)

23. Food blog you read the most (besides Isa’s because I know you check it every day). Or maybe the top 3?

Vegan YumYum aside from Isa's is the only really go to blog, the rest of the time I just Google...

24. Favorite vegan candy/chocolate?

Orange Dark Chocolate - Green and Black's

25. Most extravagant food item purchased lately?

Amy's Pizza

26. What was your favorite food BEFORE becoming veg*n?

Those damn pirogies, and while we're at it anything Mennonite/German - Borscht, Cabbage Rolls, Roll Kucken, Platz etc.

omnivore - ya'll who eat our friends... mandolin's are pretty cool - the musical kind and the violently sharp but oh so useful when it comes to saving time kind.

I really want a food processor but other than that I think it's the small stuff that I want more

can you make borscht (sans the sour cream or whatever they use)?

MAKE ME THIS: Roasted vegetables in curry with chickpeas, fresh roti and mango chutney.

i had no idea you liked that

Jenn I don't think you should be making food for anyone unless they come though me first !

I see them cookies but I am trying to stay away since I can feel my double chin growing each moment that I bite into something delicious !

Yes, Cheryl I do, the recipe is even posted, as to the borscht - it depends which kind you make - I like the spring/fall version which has tomatoes and dill in it - rather than the beet version - and yes it can be made vegan.

Cupcake recipe - shall be posted shortly though if you are planning on doing any baking just buy the book Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World it's like $12 on Chapters.ca - full of amazing recipes like Tiramisu cupcakes, Margarita ones etc
